This aircraft belonged to the 41st Fighter Squadron of the 35th Fighter Group.  On March 11, 1944 the Thunderbolt was being flown by 2/Lt George Gaffney on a mission to escort Liberators of the 90th Bombardment Group.  On the return trip, Gaffney stopped at Saidor to refuel where he said he had shot down a Japanese aircraft.  A short time after this, Gaffney's aircraft went missing between Saidor and Gusap with no sign of aircraft wreckage.
Remains of both the aircraft and pilot were found in June 1998 by a team led by Fred Hagen.  2/Lt Gaffney was buried with honours at Arlington National Cemetery on June 10, 1999.
