Sakai Verus Southerland Dogfight Over Guadalancal

American James Southerland in an F4F Wildcat downed the first Japanese plane over Guadalancal.  Moments later, Japanese pilot Saburo Sakai flying in an A6M2 Zero intercepted him.  After a furious dogfight, Southerland becoming the first American shot down over Guadalcanal, and Sakai's 59th aerial victory. Moments later, Sakai was himself wounded while attacking a group of dive bombers, flying back to his base blinded in one eye.  Southerland was rescued by Solomon Islander Bruno Nana, and returned to friendly lines, to be evacuated on a flying boat.  He too ended the war as an ace. The wreckage of his fighter were discovered by Pacifc Ghosts.
